About Sugardough
Sugardough is a fantastic independent bakery with two prime locations in Brighton and Hove. One shop sits right in the heart of the South Lanes, while the other is just a short stroll from Brighton Pier towards Hove. Whether you’re after freshly baked pastries, cakes, or artisan bread, Sugardough delivers the goods. Their cinnamon buns are a standout, but the croissants and savoury treats are equally delicious. It’s the perfect spot for a relaxed breakfast, brunch, or a sweet treat with your coffee. The laid-back vibe and attention to detail in everything they bake make, it’s no surprise that Sugardough has such a loyal following.
Where is Sugardough?
Brighton – I got this particular cinnamon bun from the Brighton branch, located right in the heart of the South Lanes. It is a restaurant offering loads of seating, a full menu as well as just buying their bakes. Just a heads-up, though—there’s no free parking in the city center, so you’ll need to pay for parking if you’re driving.
Alternatively, on the outskirts of Brighton, there are streets with free parking (Stanmer park road, Stanmer Villas) . However, bear in mind that you’ll need to walk about 20 minutes to reach the center or catch a bus. The parking spots are also not guaranteed, so it’s best to arrive early or be prepared to drive around.
Hove – This branch has fewer seats than the Brighton one, but it offers the chance to watch everything being baked from scratch while soaking in the irresistible, mouth-watering aromas of freshly baked pastries. It’s just a short walk to the seafront, making it ideal for a takeaway. While parking in the area is limited, you can find streets offering paid parking nearby.
The bun
In my opinion, Brighton’s Sugardough cinnamon buns are a delightful, no-frills treat. They’re not overly extravagant or laden with complex flavours—just a classic, old-fashioned cinnamon bun with a good, straightforward taste. However, I found myself wishing for a bit more cinnamon spice in the dough, as the exterior lacked any significant topping or extra flavour to balance it out. Despite this, it’s a solid, simple choice for anyone craving a traditional cinnamon bun. The outside of the cinnamon bun has a nice, light crispness of which creates a rip when you bite into it, while the inside is soft and pillowy. Each bite starts with a little crack of the outer layer, then you’re met with a light, airy dough. The slight chewiness is a nice touch—it makes you slow down and really enjoy it. It’s got just the right amount of stickiness to hold everything together, but honestly, I’d recommend heating it up in the oven or microwave to make it even more gooey and delicious.
The taste of Brighton’s Sugardough cinnamon buns is pure comfort with a good balance of sweetness and spice. The cinnamon flavour is warm and aromatic, but like mentioned before, I think they could add more! There’s a hint of caramelised sugar in the swirls that adds depth, while the glaze or icing on top gives just the right touch of sweetness, making it indulgent but not overly sugary. The dough itself has a subtle, almost nutty flavour that complements the cinnamon, creating a bun that’s both satisfying and simple.

Unfortunately, I don’t have many photos of this cinnamon bun, as it was devoured long before I had the idea to start this blog! Apologies for that, but rest assured, the next time I’m in Brighton, I’ll make sure to try again and take plenty of photos.
